Volcanic chimney around 90 metres deep, formed approximately 3,200 years ago in the interior of Terceira Island.
Azzy’s story
Entering Algar do Carvão means literally descending into the inside of an ancient volcano. Along the way you encounter lava walls, rare mineral formations and, at the bottom, an underground lake fed by rainwater.
