Imposing fortress begun in 1592 on Monte Brasil, originally called Castelo de São Filipe, built to defend Angra and the important Atlantic sea routes.

Azzy’s story

Built during Spanish rule, this fortress protected Angra and the ships crossing the Atlantic laden with riches. After Portuguese independence was restored it became São João Baptista and still dominates Monte Brasil with kilometres of walls.
