About this place
17th-century church inside Fortaleza de São João Baptista, commissioned after the restoration of Portuguese independence and dedicated to the saint who gave the fortress its new name.
Azzy’s story
After the Spanish forces surrendered in 1642, the fortress was renamed São João Baptista and this church was built soon afterwards. Over the centuries it suffered fires and several restorations, remaining one of the religious symbols of Monte Brasil's former military complex.
