Parish church built between 1895 and 1911, one of the largest rural churches in the Azores.
Azzy’s story
After a hurricane destroyed São Mateus's old church in 1893, the community came together to build a new church in a more sheltered location. Opened in 1911, it became one of the great symbols of the parish and of São Mateus's strong maritime community.
