About this place
Ruins of a church completed in 1700 and destroyed by a violent hurricane in 1893.
Azzy’s story
For almost two centuries, this was the parish church of São Mateus da Calheta. In 1893, a hurricane left the building almost completely destroyed and led to the construction of a new church farther inland. These ruins remain as a memory of the old parish by the sea.
