About this place
Cathedral of 16th-century origin, begun in 1568 and characterised by Portuguese plain-style architecture; it is the main church of the Diocese of Angra and one of the Azores' most important religious monuments.
Azzy’s story
The cathedral emerged as Angra gained importance as a city and as the seat of the Diocese of the Azores. Construction of the present building began in the 16th century, and since then the church has witnessed some of the most important moments in the city's religious and urban history.
